Classmates Who Have Transferred
To The Eternal Duty Station

Our love and prayers go out to the family and friends of our classmates who have gone on before us.  We will miss them, yet we can find comfort in knowing that one-day we will all join them for the greatest of all reunions.

From Wally Costa (54)   emicosta@tstar.net

It is my sad duty to inform you that Fred Parish has lost his battle with cancer. Fred Parish was at the last big reunion we had at Las Vegas as was his wife and high school sweetheart Tyke Penny, Shirley Penny's younger sister who married Mike Harper later in life. Shirl was Mike's high school sweetheart as well. Some of us Central High people really hang together!

Don't have much of an epitaph for Fred. We didn't hang together that much except that he was fun to be with. He was always on some alien kick or talking about the supernatural and what was really just beyond human sight or perception. He was so convincing sometimes some of us often wondered if he hadn't had some first hand experience.

Anyway Fred has left this world. My heart felt condolences go out to Tyke. He will be missed. And so our ranks continue to dwindle.

Memories of Bushy

From Sam (Sammy) Myers (54)  slmyers58@earthlink.net

Phil Creasor asked who is in the picture on page 6 of the December Newsletter: I have a 5"x7" copy of it which people penned names to at our reunion in Las Vegas. The event was the Sadie Hawkins Dance at TAHO in 1953 and the hobo pair is Jackie McCloud and me. On the right is Gary Baldwin with unknown dance partner, on the left is either Snookie Garrison or (maybe) Claire Griswold - the haircut more tends to Snookie.

From Donna Forsman (59) dlf16@cornell.edu

Just read the most recent Bushy Tales. Just a couple of comments.  Re. The photos that Randy Crane sent, I recognize the center three: Nancy Vorlander, Judy Garrison, and Barbara Bode.  At far right is Janet Bode.  Resolution isn't sharp enough on the others (or don't remember the backs of their heads!)

Also, I did not see the square dancing photo in the September issue, but I know that Dave Caraway and I danced together as part of the "square." In the photo on page 216 in the 1958 yearbook, left to right were Noel Ahlbum, Randy Crane, ??, Jane Milburn, Donna Forsman, Fred Buhler, Dave Caraway, Karen Kirchner.  The guys pants sure were baggy.

I still have the program from the Allied Circle Ball at the Dorchester Hotel where our square dance group performed as part of the floorshow. I think Fred Buhler's mother arranged it.  We had to learn to curtsey so we could be presented to the patroness of the ball, Princess Alexandria.  I also remember that they had some sort of a raffle and one of us won a bottle of Aquavit.  We took the bottle back to Dave Caraway's house (I think).  Presumably we drank some of it, although I remember finding it too strong to swallow.  We also amused ourselves lighting it on fire.  Anyone else remember anything about that night?

From Susan (Sue) Miller Dalberg (62) Wolfpaw81@aol.com

Morning Pat and Gary:  Yes, I would absolutely love to know who else is here in Orange County, California from Bushy Park. (If you want to put this in newsletter, great!)

Now for "real" newsletter stuff for you.

I enjoy each and every issue and each month drag out the old yearbook (which has gotten more miles recently than in the last 30-40? years) to put a face with a name.

I love the stories about the trips on the ships.  However...am I the only military brat that got shoved on a freezing cold MATS transport (airplane--or so they told us), with a ton of soldiers, jammed like sausages, falling over each other to get to the one bathroom for a trip that seemed like it lasted a week?  We touched down in the Azores for fuel, then back up in the air again. The heat NEVER came on during the whole trip.   All told, it took us 23 hours to get to London.  Course, like everybody else, we had about fifty shots before take off, so most of us were sick by the time we landed, not to mention barely being able to lift arms that felt like they weighed a ton each from the shots.  Ringing any bells?  :)

They put us up (My dad, mother and I) in a hotel on the Thames (I know that's not spelled correctly, but for the life of me, I can't type it where it looks right) River.  A bed never looked so good.  As we left the dining room that night, Daddy told the desk clerk he needed a wake up call for 5:30 A.M.  With that, the desk clerk asked him what time "he should knock up Mrs. Miller and the lass."  I thought Daddy would faint, or deck the man.  Luckily, there was another American standing close who explained that the clerk meant "what time should he wake us up?"  Culture shock had already set in at the Miller household.  I still have a couple glasses from that hotel, and remember that first month staying at the hotel and thinking I'd died and gone to heaven.  No housework, no chores, a room to myself, and the only price was a two hour bus ride into Bushy Park.

We never got "pantsed", not the girls anyhow, on our bus, but I'm sure I have a permanent bruise on my back from the guys "whapping" the bra straps.  Still never figured out the entertainment in that activity.  A guy thing I guess.

Still hoping to hear from Sharon Myers (Stevie, class of 62) who made that long bus ride with us each day.

I keep watching to see if there are other "Bushy-ites" who were stationed at HiWycomb AFB during 59-62.  Surely the Stillsons and I aren't the only ones left of the bunch.  Thanks again, Pat and Gary, for putting Judy Stillson and I back in touch.  We talked not long ago on the phone and giggled, laughed like we were 17 all over again.  She is still married to Jerry Surles, living in Virginia.

Reunions

From Billie (Culp) Bules (54)  BCBules@aol.com

The class of 1954 of London Central High School will be holding their 50th class reunion Oct. 10, 11 and 12, 2004 in Laughlin, Nevada, and have invited 1953 and 1955 classes to join them.  Contact person:  Billie (Culp) Bules, class of 1954.

More details in upcoming issues.

From Nancy Reed Robinson (56)  Nrobininin@cs.com

I would love to have a combined reunion for our years in Bushy Park. So is it for those there during 55, 56 and 57 or graduates of those years? Maybe it should be both. I have always wanted to go to a reunion but having gone to 4 high schools and two colleges with my husband of our freshman year who died two years after graduation, reunions did not work for me. It is interesting to think that my strangest high school experience was my best. Since it may be that the lack of response to the idea comes from the fact that no one has time to organize it. Have you thought about setting up something like a cruise of the Mississippi or in the Caribbean? (You can tell I now live on the East coast.) If we do that then the Bushy  Tales can announce it and the venue host can be the place that gets our money and organizes the event for us when we offer them ideas. It could also be a land location but the organizing and registration are big questions in my mind.

Maybe we need an idea board for this topic. Thanks for bringing it up!

Mini Reunions

From Jerry Kelly (58)  JKelly1597@aol.com

Hi Gary:  I thank you for the effort that you and the others put into getting the newsletter out to us Brats.

For the first time since June of 1958 I made the trip back to England. My wife and I left from Los Angeles and flew direct to London.  The trip took around nine hours, a big difference from the last trip in late 56.  I found everything had changed so much that nothing was familiar.  My sister and brother-in-law met us at Heathrow and the four of us played tourist.  We spent five nights in London near the Paddington train station and one night near High Wycombe where we spent a day with some English friends from 1956.  I was also able to meet up with one of my 1958 classmates, Malcolm Osmundson. Malcolm has been in England for the past 44 years. Malcolm came to the hotel and we went for a beer at a nearby pub and spent a couple of hours just talking about whatever came to mind.  One interesting thing came up and that was that both of our fathers were stationed at Muroc Army Air Base (now Edwards AFB) in the early 40's.

We all had a good time and the weather could not have been much better. We even missed a transit strike by a couple of days.  The next time I go over I plan to stay a lot longer.  I hope to see many of the Brats at the San Diego reunion next year.

From Kathie de Russy (60) der1213@hotmail.com

Thanks for another newsy issue. It is fun to enjoy the memories.

Recently I visited with John Cooper and his lovely daughter, Kim. Enclosed picture is one I took of John when we visited one of the beautiful Roosevelt historical estates. Bill Cooper called while I was there, so I had a chance to speak with him also. There were lots of laughs to share. The reunions are a wonderful connection with times that I thought were lost.  While I was there both John and I celebrated birthdays, BIG ones. Lamar (Parish) Robitaille had sent celebration goodies, which graced the party table. Who said we don't connect?  John has recently received another great review for his children's book, FIRST DAY. As a teacher, I have shared this book with young students who received it so well. I heartily recommend it to all

Do You Know Who Lives Close to
You And Also Went To Bushy?

We've located 840 of the approximately 2300 students who attended Bushy from 1953-62.  Of these - it is unknown where 23 live - we only have e-mail address or state; 72 are deceased.  Classmates live in 48 of the 50 states and the District of Columbia; apparently no one wants to live in North Dakota or Vermont.  We also have classmates in the following countries:  Australia, Belgium (2), France (2), Ireland, Singapore, UAE, Japan, England (6), Canada and Bulgaria.  California has the most with 135 living there, Texas has 88, Florida has 58 and Virginia has 51.

If you would like a list of those who live in your State, or another State, send Pat Owen an email at nemoamasa@worldnet.att.net Please remember she will only be sending out the lists once or twice a month so, if you don’t get a reply right away don’t worry.  She will get it to you.

This and That

From Martha Kelly (Faculty) martha.kelly@virgin.net

Hey Gary - thanks - besides being OLD and decrepit, I am computer illiterate, so thanks for the word format - if it is not too much trouble, please always do that, because I wouldn't know what to do to activate the Adobe function - and especially thanks for adding Carol Albert (World's Cutest Student circa '57)Yacavonne to the list - just THINK of the good she did the other students by keeping me cheerful and good-humored all the time - my best to you, and all your chums - by the way, do you send it to Edna Leigh's daughter? Or wasn't she at Bushy then - cheers, Martha Gail

From Jerry Berry (55) jlberry@athos.avigne.org

I've been trying to find a poem that appeared in the BP school newsletter around Christmas 1955 or maybe 54.  I used to have a copy, and may still have it somewhere, but it's unfound after a week of digging.  It's a parody of "A Visit From St. Nick", and a few lines that I remember are:

T’was the night before Christmas, and all through the pad, Not a creature was stirring, not even old dad.

The tires were hung by the chimney with care, in hopes that St. Nicholas would fill them with air"

And a little later, we have:

"With a little old driver, so lively and cool, that I knew right away it must be April Fool".

Any one out there has a copy of this?  Remember who wrote it?  Thanks,

(Editors Note:  The following concerns the article from Billie (Culp) Bules (54) about the reunion for the 53, 54, and 55 classes.  She sent out an email to the members of those classes and these are a couple of the replies.)

From Jon Searles  (55) searles@smtexas.org

Wow, sounds great.  I am retiring from teaching in May 2003.  So, my wife and I will be available in October 2004 to travel to Nevada for the reunion.  We would like to participate in all activities scheduled.

Effective in May 2003, my email will change to woodenbuffalo@earthlink.net

This address is active now but my St. Mark's email is more convenient until May.

Thanks Billie and thanks Nancie for all you have done over the years.

From Ruth Bethea (55)  rbethea@cox.net

Hi class of '55,

I was excited to be included with the class of '54 in their celebration of 50 years.

I sent an email to Nancie and Billie immediately to tell them I'd be attending (as I've attended all the other reunions).

In Nancie's email I mentioned working on OUR 50th reunion and Nancie said, "I think this is our 50th, Ruth. " I want our own 50th reunion (and we can invite them to help US celebrate). I'm even willing to plan it if everyone would come to the Washington, DC area.  Anyone got any ideas?  Is having it in London an option for anyone?

From Nancie (Anderson) Weber (55) nanciet@inland.net

Will you please ask your newsletter readers if anyone has issues of the HI TIMES from years 52-53, 53-54? I'm specifically looking for students' birthdays. And any clues, actually, that might turn up our missing classmates.

From Jerry Hoffman (59)   riverrun@crosslink.net

I am now living in London.  I am heading a team selling a company and will be here most likely until the spring.  I haven't gotten to Bushy Park yet.  Sort of nice to be back for a while although I have been back and forth fairly often over the years.

Please keep me in touch on what is going on and whether or not there will be any reunions in the future.  Thank you for touching base with me.

From Renold Briggs (60) renpat1671@uneedspeed.net

Looking back, it's hard to believe that we have lived as long as we have.

As children we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a pickup truck on a warm day was always a special treat.

Our baby cribs were painted with bright colored lead based paint. We often chewed   on the crib, ingesting the paint.

The crib spokes were too far apart and we lived.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors, or cabinets.

We rode our bikes and we had no helmets.

We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then rode down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times we learned to solve the problem.

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on. No one was able to reach us all day.

We played dodge ball and sometimes the ball would really hurt and stick-all too.

We ate cupcakes, bread and butter, and drank sugar soda, but we were never over weight; we were always outside playing.

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment.

Some students weren't as smart as others or didn't work hard so they failed a grade and were held back to repeat the same grade.

That generation produced some of the greatest risk-takers and problem solvers.

We had the freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all.

I just found out about a new site for Bentwaters and Woodbridge.  I have added it to our "Links" button but I thought perhaps you might like to mention it in the newsletter for those who may be interested.   http://www.bentwaters.org/

It has some pictures and memories for those who lived there.  Felixstowe, Suffolk, etc..

I did not know the search engine was not working on the BP site until someone brought it to my attention.  It has now been fixed and another one added thanks to Bob Harrold.

From John Phillips  georgep@epix.net

Just wanted you to know that the graduating class was misreported for Patricia Ann (Phillips) Neafie in the "LOOK WHO WE FOUND SECTION" of the November edition of " BUSHY TALES" The class was misreported as 1960.  Patricia graduated in 1959.  She is interested in hearing from any of her old classmates. Her regular Mail address is:

Saving Veterans’ Stories

We have memorials, books and films honoring our veterans, but we have not had a place to preserve their stories.   Now we do: the Library of Congress’ new Veterans History Project, co-sponsored by the AARP. The project has collected oral histories on audio and video, letters, photos and journals from veterans of World Wars I and II, Korea, Vietnam and the Persian Gulf war.  For more information, visit www.loc.gov/vets or call 1-800-315-8300.

The December newsletter is posted now and I have divided the years separately now.  One of the pictures did not come out well and I have asked you both for an emailed copy of it.  When I get it I will replace the one showing.

How is the BP timeline coming along?

You might mention in the next newsletters (and every so often) that if any links do not work to let us know.  This site has gotten sooooo large that it is hard to check everything to make sure it is still working.

Comments From You Our Readers

From Shirley (Huff) Dulski (57)  SDulski@acs.carleton.edu

Even tho' I have not contributed to the newsletter, I would be lost without it. As soon as it hits my email, I have to stop everything to read it. Through the work of the newsletter and Pat, I have found my Bushy Park roommate, Jacqueline Holder Asher, and dear friends, Carol Bassham and Celeste Plitouke Brodigan. Fr Aaron and I have kept in touch thru the years. Fr. Aaron, Pat, Celeste and I had a wonderful, long lunch a couple of years ago in Kansas City. In fact, Celeste flew in especially for it. Now I can hardly wait until Jacqueline and Carol can join us. Thank you for all of your work and dedication to keep us in touch with one another.

From Susan Miller Dalberg (62) wolfpaw81@aol.com

You know what would be fun if we could pull it off?  Photos of each of us "then" (even if we had to use yearbook photos) and "now" for the newsletters. Too many of us to do that you think?  How about, at least for the seniors who had posted what they were going to be when they grew up, to what they actually turned out doing.  God, those geeky glasses we all wore. Yeccch.

From Lyn Peterson Stinnett (58) Roverlyn@yahoo.com

Hello from China...six more months to retirement and they send me here to work...not bad.  The Peace Corps is called the China Friendship Volunteers here, they have about seventy or so scattered around.  I will be "at home" in June, in Arizona.  My home location address is 12615 S. 130th Street, Gilbert, AZ 85234 (but not good for mail until I get back into my home.)

As plans go I will see you whenever!

From Valerie Filinson Katz (60) TexxVal@satx.rr.com

It makes me so happy to read all the news.  I appreciate all your effort and time.   Wish I could find Marion Irving and Sandy Paul, class of '60.  They were my buddies.
